Watermark Senior Living Community, a high-end facility that bridges the gap between assisted living centers and nursing homes, is now open in Fridley.
The all-inclusive luxury facility houses 28 studio apartments designed to help residents feel at home in a comfortable living environment.
The concept at Watermark is to bridge the gap that is perceived to exist between assisted living communities and nursing homes by combining the best of both worlds. Watermark provides residents with the privacy of living in their own apartment while also providing a higher level of assisted living not offered in traditional assisted living settings.
“When someone is at an assisted living facility and they are looking to make the possible move into a nursing home or if there are behavioral problems with dementia, they can come here because we are able to take those higher care levels,” said Executive Director Jennifer Thorson. “We can help anyone dealing with the later stages of dementia to brain injuries to anyone that needs more intensive care.”
Apartments are designed to keep residents living as independent as possible, for as long as possible.
Each room has its own 43 inch smart TV, full bathroom with heated floors and low step showers, video phones, emergency response system, and closet. Residents are also allowed to bring their own furniture and decorate their space to reflect their own personal taste.
“Because residents have their own apartment and their own bathroom it doesn’t have an institutionalized feel like nursing homes,” said Thorson.
However, residents are promised around the clock care. Watermark will house one care provider for every five residents including an in house physician, dentist, ideologist and pediatrist that will do weekly and monthly rounds for our residents.
“That will also fluctuate based on need and severity,” said Thorson. “We have five different care levels so it all depends on what is needed. We make the promise that every resident here will get one-on-one attention. When a resident hits their pendant they are able to get a staff member to them immediately. There are some places that they are waiting 45 minutes to use the bathroom.”
Upon admission, residents will interview with the Watermark activities director, a nurse, a chef and the executive director to get a customized living plan.
“We create a schedule for them and plan activities that they enjoy doing,” said Thronson. “If they like doing puzzles we will get them puzzles.”
Residents are encouraged to continue living the lifestyle they are accustomed to.
Each day, the in-house chef will make three home-cooked meals plus healthy snacks, which are all served daily in the dining room.
“That is irreplaceable in senior living,” said Thronson. “You aren’t going to find frozen meals here because we are so small we can provided meals from scratch the day of.”
Phase two of the facility is currently under construction and will include a movie theater, party room, hair salon and a one bedroom couple’s suite. A courtyard is also available for daily activities or for special events.
This is the first of three Watermark facilities. A Golden Valley and Burnsville location will be opening within the next two years.
Watermark of Fridley is located at 5300 4th Street NE.
