The second-seeded Eagles (26-12) fell 6-4 to the No. 1 seed Cretin-Derham Hall-based Legion squad after falling behind 6-1 through eight innings in North St. Paul. Ben Iannazzo, Joseph Linders and Jack Kroehler had a RBI apiece for Totino-Grace. Ryan Suggs led the Eagles in hits with two.

Linders pitched five innings for the Eagles, based out of Fridley Post 303, and threw 24-first pitch strikes and one strikeout. Peyton Schuler went 1.2 innings with five first-pitch strikes and a strikeout. Kroehler pitched 1.1 innings and fanned a batter while throwing eight first-pitch strikes.

It marked the second-straight loss for the Eagles. They fell 8-6 to Sub State 7 champion Mahtomedi July 19. Dylan Dubuque fanned four Mahtomedi batters in six innings while tossing 24 first-pitch strikes.

Mahtomedi, the No. 3 seed, still peppered the Eagles with runs from the third inning on. The Eagles grabbed leads of 2-0 in the second inning and 3-1 in the third before momentum swung. The Zephyrs jumped ahead with three runs in the fourth inning.

While they went back-and-forth through the later innings, Mahtomedi grabbed a three-run lead, 8-5, in the top of the ninth. Totino-Grace added a run in the bottom of the inning but fell short.

Iannazzo led the Eagles lineup with three RBI, and Sam Hill had a team-high three hits. The Eagles got out hit 13-11.

Totino-Grace came into the game off a 16-8 win over North St. Paul-based Hamline Red July 18. Eric Rataczak drove in seven runs, and Schuler added four as the Eagles extended their season. Zach Jezierski fanned a couple batters for Post 303 in 4.2 innings, and he threw 24 first-pitch strikes. Linders went 4.1 innings with 14 first-pitch strikes.

Tri-City Maroon makes noise
After beating Chisago Lakes 9-2 for the Sub State 8 tournament play-in game July 17, Tri-City Maroon gave No. 1 seed Tri-City Red all it could handle.

Tri-City Maroon, based out of Irondale, fell to Mounds View High-based Tri-City Red 7-5 July 19 at CHS Field in St. Paul. Maroon’s season ended the following day in an 11-1 loss to Lino Lakes.

Tri-City Red, the host team for the Division Legion state tournament this week, fell short of the Sub State 8 title in losses finalists Stillwater and Forest Lake. Tri-City Legion Post 513 in New Brighton, which sponsors Red and Maroon, hosts the state tournament at CHS Field. The tournament began Thursday after press deadlines and runs through July 31.

Fridley goes 1-2 at Sub State 9
Fridley High-based Post 303 started strong in the Sub State 9 tournament with an 8-6 win over the Brooklyn Park Knights July 18 in Coon Rapids. Post 303 couldn’t keep the momentum long with a 12-1 loss the next day against Sub State 9 runner-up Coon Rapids.

Fridley’s season ended July 20 in a 16-2 loss to Wayzata II.
