Ramsey County Regional Railroad Authority and District 1 Community Council are hosting an open house for the public to learn more about the East Metro Rail Yards Improvement Project.
Ramsey County Regional Railroad Authority, stakeholder railroads and local organizations are working together on the East Metro Rail Yards Improvement Project. This project will identify upgrades to improve movement of freight trains in the region and accommodate additional future passenger rail connections to Union Depot. The project team will review previously identified improvements in an area that extends from Union Depot southeast to approximately I-494 as part of this work. Concept engineering plans will be developed and potential environmental impacts will be examined prior to implementation of improvements.
This area includes track and multiple rail yards owned by BNSF Railway, Canadian Pacific Railway and Union Pacific Railroad and is an important hub of economic activity for the region and the nation. However, due to infrastructure limitations causing slow speeds and competition for space on the tracks, trains are often delayed or blocked. Options to keep trains moving are limited, because alternate routes are very long and time-consuming.
The community open house will be held at the Battle Creek Recreation Center, 75 Winthrop Street S, St. Paul. All are welcome to drop in anytime between 6:30-8 p.m. Monday, July 24, and have the opportunity to view exhibits and speak with project representatives. Light refreshments will be provided.
