Loving Father, Grandfather and FriendKenneth E. Hentges, age 81, of Columbia Heights, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2017.
Kenny was born and raised in Columbia Heights and was the number one fan of his hometown.
He was a wonderful husband, father, grand-father, and friend. He was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need, always willing to offer his opinion whether you wanted it or not – he was a straight shooter. His spirit lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Kenny owned and operated Columbia Metal Fab., Inc. in Columbia Heights for 25 years, retiring in 1998. Kenny served as Councilman for the city of Columbia Heights for eight years, as well as multiple committees within the city. He also served as a Board Member of the Anoka County Fairgrounds for 12 years. He proudly served in the Korean War as a member of the U.S. Army. After retirement, he focused on his passion and love of American Flyer model railroad trains and was a member of the Lakes and Pines Train Collectors Association.
He is preceded in death by wife Nancy, parents Peter and Antoinette (Smarzik); step-father Harold Bucholtz; brothers Charles, Myron “Tippy”, Francis “Wheatie”; sisters Mary Lou and Beverly.
Survived by daughters Debbie (Jim) Moe, Jeanne (Roger) Myrkle; grandchildren Joshua, Jonathan, Mikaela, Malina, Mackenzie and Logan; brothers James “Dick” and Donald; sister Gloria; as well as best childhood buddies, Jim LaPlant and Gary Gunter. Also survived by several other family members and countless friends.
Visitation will be on Thursday, June 22, from 4-7 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home, Fridley, with prayer vigil at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 23, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 4030 Jackson Street, Col. Hts. 763-788-9062, with visitation one hr prior to Mass at church. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the University of Minnesota Foundation for cancer research.
