Whether they were walking by the crime lab or in a holding cell, seeing the inside of an emergency command vehicle or boat or listening to stories from an Anoka County historian, a Sept. 18 open house gave Anoka County residents a chance to learn about the past and present of the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office.

The three-hour event featured displays of vehicles from the sheriff’s office as well as Allina and the Andover Fire Department. North Memorial Hospital even brought in a helicopter.

Vickie Wendel and Todd Mahon of the Anoka County Historical Society were on-hand to sell a book Wendel recently completed on the first 153 years of the sheriff’s office. The books will also be on sale at the Anoka County Historical Society, 2135 Third Ave. N, in Anoka. Call Wendel at 763-421-0600 or email [email protected] for more information.

The main community room contained a number of educational displays so parents could find out more about child car seats and bike helmets, the B.U.L.L.Y. Foundation or the Family Promise of Anoka County non-profit that offers the homeless shelter in area churches.
