At approximately 2:52 a.m. on Feb. 19, the New Brighton Department of Public Safety was dispatched to the 900 block of Third Street N.W. for a reported house fire. The initial units arrived within two minutes and determined an attached garage was on fire, and flames were extending into the attic of the residence.
Personnel ensured the occupants were evacuated safely and declared the fire under control in about 15 minutes. Despite the damage being confined to the exterior of the house and a small portion of the attic space, the residence will not be inhabitable.
There were no injuries to firefighters or the residents. The house was equipped with working smoke detectors, but did not have a residential fire sprinkler system. The Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents in meeting their initial needs. The department of public safety was assisted by Allina Medical Transportation, Metro Transit and the Salvation Army, due to the extreme cold.
The fire is under investigation, however it does not appear to be suspicious in nature.
