Final Mounds View EDC actions for 2012
Chair recognized; 3 applications for vacant seats recommended
The Mounds View Economic Development Commission (EDC) on Dec. 21 recommended the applications of three individuals who are interested in serving on the EDC beginning in 2013.
The EDC acts as an advisory body to the Economic Development Authority (EDA), and the EDC is comprised of seven members – four residents and three business representatives.
EDC Chair Torri Johnson, who represents Xcel Energy, chose not to reapply for another term.
Commissioner Gary Meehlhause’s EDC seat was vacated because he begins serving on the City Council in January. Commissioner Jason Helgemoe, who represents Western Bank, decided to reapply for a seat on the EDC.
The other two applicants include Jim Freichels, president of Dell-Comm in Mounds View, and Gary Stevenson, who serves as chair on the Mounds View Planning Commission.
Meehlhause said that Helgemoe has been a great member of the EDC and thanked him for reapplying. He added that all three are excellent applicants.
The three applications were unanimously recommended for EDA approval, with Helgemoe abstaining from voting.
Chair Johnson was presented with a certificate of appreciation for her community leadership. She began serving on the EDC in May 2000.
Economic Development Specialist Heidi Steinmetz, who is the staff liaison to the EDC, thanked Johnson for her extraordinary leadership and the vision for the city she’s shown while serving.
Johnson said that after 12 years, she figured it was time to let a new person serve on the EDC.
“It’s been fun. I’ve met a lot great people, and we’ve done some great work,” she said. “My thing is to make sure businesses, homeowners and government are working together.
“I think we’ve done a lot of great things as a city, and I think there’s so much more (to be done). I will miss you all. Thank you for the certificate. It is very much appreciated.”
