Here’s a quick look back at 2012 in Columbia Heights and Fridley through the lenses of editors’ cameras.
- Melissa Hausen of Brooklyn Center kneels to give Caleb, 3, a hand with launching a tennis ball from an oversized sling shot while Isaac, 5, watches. The tennis ball launch was one of several outdoor attractions at the WinterFest event Jan. 28 at Commons Park in Fridley. The event featured a hockey tournament, s’mores, a bonfire, hayrides, and a fire truck, as well as indoor activities including a youth dance, carnival games and refreshments. - The Columbia Heights Public Library hosted a Hunger Games Launch event on March 16, in anticipation of “The Hunger Games” movie premiere on March 23. The library offered various activities in its Hunger Games Arena, which included receiving a District Badge, making a Mockingjay pin, practicing camouflage painting, constructing a bow and arrow and tying survival knots. Pictured here, teens try their hand at using a bow and arrow during the Hunger Games Launch. The supplies for each bow and arrow included a pen shaft, rubber band, Q-tip and pen tip. - Fridley’s Stevenson and Hayes elementary schools, as part of their “Take Action” annual projects, hosted a 5K fun run on May 19, beginning at Commons Park. Proceeds from the event will go toward a project to build a school in Rwanda, the Angel Foundation to support cancer patients and care packages for soldiers. Pictured here, Connor McCoy, 10, of Fridley crosses the finish line and drops onto the cool grass in Commons Park, to be greeted by his family. Connor, the first youth to cross the finish line, is a student at Stevenson Elementary and is on the student council, which assisted with organizing the event. - The Minnesota Law Enforcement Memorial Association performs a rededication ceremony of a monument July 25 that that honors Columbia Heights Officer Curtis Ramsdell, who died in the line of duty in 1977. The park was recently improved and is named after Ramsdell, who was shot in the line of duty on July 30, 1977, while transporting a prisoner to the Anoka County Jail. The suspect was apprehended and convicted of second-degree murder. Ramsdell had been with the Columbia Height Police Department for 14 years. (File photo by Kassie Petermann – Sun Newspapers)
- “Ring, ring,” says one child, acting as the mother in the story “Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed” while another student, as the doctor in the story, looks at a page in the book for a cue. Parents of pre-kindergarten students dropped in on the last day of their children’s summer school at Hayes Elementary on July 19 for a learning session of their own. In a short instructional session, parents received kits with literacy and math activities to do daily at home during the rest of summer. Parents also watched the children, ages 4-5, perform the stories of “The Three Billy Goats Gruff” and “Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed.” The short summer school program and at-home activities help children adjust to their kindergarten classes.
