Guest column: A legacy of high expectations – MV Schools Foundation

BY BRIAN STRUB – Guest Columnist

Excellence in education is what sets Minnesota apart, and it is what sets our community apart. Our Mounds View Public Schools are widely recognized as not only among the best in the Twin Cities and the state, but among the best in the country.

Excellence in the Mounds View Public Schools is a result of high expectations for student achievement in our community. Our parents had high expectations of us, and we have high expectations for our children. This legacy of high expectations is what drives and sustains the current excellence in our local public schools. Now it is our time, and our turn, to maintain that lofty standard for the generations to come.

The Mounds View Schools Education Foundation has been a part of this legacy of educational excellence for the past 25 years. Formerly known as the 621 Foundation, the Foundation is one of our community’s best-kept secrets. The Foundation’s success – our shared success – can no longer remain a secret.

Since 1986, the Foundation has turned community support into more than $1 million in grants to teachers, classrooms, projects, and educational initiatives in each of our district’s elementary, middle, and high schools.

Foundation grants funded the ACT exams for all juniors districtwide for the past two years (the first and only district in Minnesota to offer this), purchased hand-held computer technology for students in 2011, and will provide funding for the district’s very popular Laurentian Environmental Center in 2013.

None of this would be possible without the generous support of people like you – district residents, local business owners, alumni and friends of the Mounds View Public Schools.

To be successful, we need your help. We invite you to visit the Mounds View Schools Education Foundation website (www.moundsviewschoolsef.org) to learn more. We hope you watch our video from the 2012 Physics Fairs (a Foundation-sponsored program which is the largest of its kind in the nation), join our e-mail list to learn about upcoming events and opportunities, and show your support with a financial donation. And let us know if you would like to become involved with the Foundation. We are always on the lookout for potential board members, volunteers, event planners, organizers and others who care about the success of our students, schools and community.

The legacy of high expectations for the Mounds View Public Schools is in our hands. Will you pass it on?
